The Treatment and Symptom Management online course offers foundational knowledge for the safe and effective care of the oncology patient. This course is designed for oncology nurses with some experience in oncology.

  • Cancer Treatment Modalities: vascular access devices, radiation, surgery, biologic and targeted therapy, chemotherapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, complementary, alternative, and integrative modalities
  • Symptom Management: etiology and patterns of symptoms, oncology-related toxicity and grading scales, anatomical and surgical alterations, principles of pharmacologic management of symptoms, alterations in hematologic function, alterations in immune function, alterations in gastrointestinal,  genitourinary, integumentary, and pulmonary, neurologic, musculoskeletal, nutrition, comfort: pain and fatigue.
  • Oncologic Emergencies: DIC, TTP, SIADH, systemic inflammatory response syndrome, sepsis, and septic shock, TLS, hypersensitivity and anaphylaxis, HCM, cardiac tamponade, SCC, SVCS, increased intracranial pressure, obstructions, cancer treatment-related pneumonitis, extravasation

Expected Outcomes

Upon completion of this activity, the learner will demonstrate knowledge of treatment and symptom management associated with cancer and oncologic emergencies by achieving a post test score of 80% or higher.

This course is appropriate for oncology nurses who wish to increase their knowledge of the treatment and symptom management criteria specific to effective oncology nursing practice. This course is also appropriate for those who are preparing for oncology nursing certification examination and renewal via Individual Learning Needs Assessment (ILNA) renewal points.
