What Is an Abstract?

Trailblazer Definition

An abstract is a summary of a project or research study that identifies its significance, objectives, interventions, findings, and discussion of results.

Once abstracts are submitted for potential presentation at ONS Congress, they are scored by oncology nursing experts in a blind review process. The highest scoring abstracts will be accepted for presentation at ONS Congress as either an oral abstract/project presentation or an ePoster presentation.

Abstract Submission and Notifications

Abstracts are no longer being accepted for the 48th Annual ONS Congress. The general abstract submission window was open from August 15–September 29, 2022. Late-breaking abstract submissions in the Research and Industry-Supported (non-NCPD) categories were accepted from December 9, 2022–January 12, 2023.

Abstracts may be submitted in the following categories:

  • Advanced practice
  • Clinical practice
  • Leadership/management/education
  • Radiation (new this year)
  • Research
  • Quality improvement
  • Industry-supported (non-NCPD)

Authors should submit their work within the category that they feel it best fits. Once an abstract has been submitted to a category, neither the author nor ONS is permitted to change the category.

Detailed abstract information and submission links can be found here

The first author listed on the abstract submission will be the person who receives all communication from ONS regarding the abstracts and will be responsible for uploading information. This author will also be listed as the first/primary author in the online publication of the abstract in the Oncology Nursing Forum. If the primary author is unable to present the accepted abstract, another person may present in their place but the primary author will still be the primary contact from ONS and be responsible for completing all deadlines and notifying the alternate presenter of any communications received from ONS.

When deciding whether you are going to submit your work, it is important to review the scoring criteria and make sure that you can answer all the questions. If you determine that you have enough information to answer all scoring criteria questions, you can submit a trial in progress. Trials in progress abstracts will only be accepted for ePoster, if scored high enough to make the cut score.

No, ONS does not accept abstracts that have already been presented at another national meeting or previously published.

Abstract notifications for the general call were sent in mid-November 2022. Notifications for late-breaking abstracts will be sent in mid-February 2023. You may need to check your junk or spam mailbox, as the email will come from ons@confex.com

All abstracts are scored and then ranked according to score. A panel then determines a cut score for oral abstracts, ePosters, and declined abstracts. The highest scored abstracts are accepted as oral abstracts and placed into a session with three other similarly themed abstracts which are presented concurrently. The next set of abstracts is accepted as ePosters that will be presented during the ePoster sessions. All accepted abstracts are published online in Oncology Nursing Forum.

Once an abstract is accepted for presentation at ONS Congress, it may not be presented at another conference until the presentation is complete at the end of ONS Congress.  You may withdraw you abstract from the other conference, or, if desired, from ONS Congress.

Once you have submitted your abstract and it has been accepted, you are not able to make any changes to the abstract, the category in which it was submitted, or authorship.

ONS accepted late-breaking Research and Industry-supported (non-NCPD) abstract submissions for 2023 ONS Congress from December 9, 2022–January 12, 2023.

Notifications for late-breaking abstracts will be sent in mid-February 2023.

Abstracts can be withdrawn through the Abstract submission center prior to the submission deadline.  After the submission deadline, please email conferences@ons.org for any withdrawal requests.

ePosters

ePoster presentations are exactly 10 minutes long and automatically proceed to the next presentation when the allotted time has been reached. Please build in time for Q&A.

Due to the volume of ePoster presentations, presentation slot changes cannot be accommodated. If you are unable to attend your assigned time slot, you may have another author present the poster. However, if no authors are able to attend the presentation, the poster will still be shown on the monitor for its assigned 10 minutes.

Yes, you must attend the entire ePoster session, and please arrive at least 15 minutes before it begins to get comfortable at your monitor.

Attendees are able to access all ePosters online and can print them through the website. You may bring other handouts with you, but they cannot be left at the ePoster station as ONS does not provide storage for handouts.
